Experts say 95% of the sea remains a mystery.
For diver/ photographer Miguel Pereira, he got a taste of that mystery just off the coast of Portugal.
It was just another day at the underwater office in Santa Maria Island. Miguel and his team were in the middle of the expedition when suddenly, they came across a massive creature.
The clip filmed back in 2013 has garnered over three million views on YouTube. We can only expect that number to rise over time. After all, how many times in your life can you say you’ve seen a fish that colossal, right?!
Almost alien in its size and form, they came face to face with a sunfish also known as Mola Mola. It is the largest bony fish known in the world, weighing over 2,268 kilograms (5,000 pounds). It can grow over 10 feet in length and 14 feet across the fins. That’s one jaw dropping fish we didn’t even know existed!
The body of a sunfish is truncated that’s somewhat circular. It also has a back fin that folds onto itself as it grows, which also serves as a rudder. As if this creature couldn’t look more bizarre, its mouth doesn’t full close.
